How To Write in Assamese



 Having problem viewing Assamese text on your computer?

          This may be because you have no Assamese fonts installed in your system. Try installing some Assamese unicode fonts, then you will be able to view the assamese texts perfectly. You can download Assamese unicode fonts form the following links:

     To be able to write in Assamese, you need to install any of the following Assamese Unicode writing Tool.

1.     Avro Keyboard: Download and install avro keyboard. This tool is very helpful for novices to learn typing in Assamese. Download from Here. Another advantage with this software is that you can create your own keyboard layout arranging the keys in the position of your choice.
2.     Baraha: Another great unicode typing tool for Indian Languages. Now the Free version of Baraha is not available. You can download an evaluation version of Baraha from their Website. Alternatively you can download the older version of Baraha software(Full/Registered) from Here.
3.     Microsoft Indic Input: A tool from Microsoft for Assamese typing. You can type in phonetic or inscript as you wish using this tool. You can download this tool from BhashaIndia website.

How to enable Assamese Writing in Linux Operating System:

(Instance described here is Ubuntu v11.04)

      1. You can install Assamese Language Pack to enable Assamese as a desktop language.
        Go to System> Administration > Language Support and install অসমীয়া
2.     Install ibus (Intelligent Input Bus for Linux / Unix OS) . To install follow these steps:
a. Open terminal
b. type this command
       sudo apt-get install ibus
3.     Install ibus-m17n package by typing the following command in the terminal window:
       sudo apt-get install ibus-m17n
4.     Go to System> Administration > Language Support and in the Language tab, select ibus in Keyboard input method system.
5.     Now a keyboard symbol will appear in the notification area of your system. Click on that icon and select Preference.
Alternatively you can go to System>Preferences>Keyboard Input Method
6.     The ibus Preference menu will open. Click on input Method tab. Then click on  Select an Input Method . Move to Assamese, the available keyboards will appear(Assamese Phonetic, Assamese Inscript and Assamese-itrans). Select and add all the three keyboards. Now you are ready to write in your own language.
7.     Open any text editor(Gedit | LibreOffice | OpenOffice) and click on the keyboard on the notification area of your system to select input method. Select any one the Assamese keyboards of your convenient. For some excercise, try typing with the keyboards selecting one by one and select the most easiest one for you. You will now be able to type in Assamese anywhere, in your Office applications, text editors, and web applications like facebook or twitter.
